The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society is committed to providing the community with valuable educational programs, services and resources that relate to animal welfare and animal care.

From animal welfare issues to managing elementary, secondary, and tertiary school outreach programs, to passing on helpful pet-related information, we aim to make this site a valuable resource for everyone with people-pet relationships.

Education Outreach Program

The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society’s Education Outreach Programme is designed to excite, interest and engage elementary, secondary, and tertiary level school students.

The programme is interactive and teaches students about responsible animal care and ownership. It also encourages students to be more compassionate towards animals and helps them understand the importance of fostering appropriate relationships between humans and animals.

Our programme has seen many groups pass through the shelter and the donkey sanctuary. We frequently host groups from schools, day care centers, pre-schools, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, church groups, and summer camps. The children, especially the younger ones, take pleasure in playing with the cats and dogs at the shelter as well as petting the donkeys in the sanctuary.

Groups have the option of adopting a donkey during their visit. The adoption fee is US$25.00 and helps us to worm them and provide them with regular feed as well as farrier and veterinary attention they might need. As part of the adoption programme, an adoption certificate is handed out and the group or individual will be placed on our mailing list to receive our bi-monthly newsletter.
